Arsenal’s talisman Aubameyang worked his Wembley magic once again as they came from behind to beat Chelsea and win the FA Cup for a record 14th time.
Chelsea took the lead inside five minutes through Christian Pulisic’s smart finish but then fell victim to the brilliance of Aubameyang, who scored twice to hand Arsenal their 14th Fa Cup silverware.
Chelsea were hampered by a first-half injury to Azpilicueta and were struggling even further when they lost the outstanding Pulisic to a hamstring problem after the break.
As the Blues battled to overcome those setbacks, the brilliant Aubameyang was able to give Mikel Arteta silverware in his first season as the Gunners’ manager.
Chelsea’s agony increased further when Mateo Kovacic was very harshly sent off for a second yellow card, awarded by referee Anthony Taylor for the most innocuous of challenges on Granit Xhaka.
The defeat was heartbreaking for Chelsea and Frank Lampard but the Injury setback worsened the situation as Chelsea saw two of their most important players Christian Pulisic and Azpiliqueta taken off.
Frank Lampard after the match revealed that Pulisic’s injury is a hamstring strain but will need scanning. Lampard also went as far as saying that he won’t be fit for next week’s game, meaning the injury could very well end Pulisic’s first season at Chelsea.
Pulisic made some history with the goal, becoming the first U.S. men’s international to score in an FA Cup final
His injury is a big blow though, as he’s been Chelsea’s most important player in attack since the restart. Chelsea will face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League tie.
“We didn’t have the luck with the injuries, and things all came together for us today in a way we wouldn’t want. Two hamstring injuries for Azpi and Pulisic, a dislocated shoulder for Pedro and Willian getting injured yesterday before the game.
“Kante wasn’t really fit for this game, it was only a maybe if we needed him depending on how the game was going and having to make the subs when I did, made it very difficult to risk him. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was out too, as we get to the end of a very long season.
Arsenal closed out the win to secure a place in the Europa League next season but it was bitter disappointment for Chelsea manager Frank Lampard at the conclusion of his first campaign in charge
